The Mess Didn't Change... I Did 🗝️

I got home from an afternoon of mountain biking with my girlfriends feeling on top of the world. I opened the sliding glass door... and immediately wanted to close it again.
My twin maniacs (and husband) decided snacks were a perfectly acceptable dinner. The couch had exploded into a blanket fort. Reggae music was blasting and Paw Patrol was streaming on TV. There were dishes, wrappers, pillows, and approximately 437 things out of place.
My whole face dropped.

Old Steph would've gone straight into detective mode.
"Who left this here?"
"Why didn't they eat a real dinner?"
"Why is the music SO loud?"
"Why does Kevin always do things SO differently than I would?"
You know... professional problem hunting😅
But this time, I caught myself. Just one little pause. And gosh... that space changed everything.
I looked around again. Not through the eyes of someone looking for problems, but through the eyes of someone looking for treasure✨
My husband had just given me an afternoon with my friends. He had my back. The kids were laughing so hard they could barely breathe. They were making memories. They felt safe enough to turn our living room into their own little kingdom.
Suddenly, I wasn't looking at a mess. I was looking at love.
The house hadn't changed one bit. I had.
Instead of marching in and shutting down the fun, I thanked my hero hubs with a kiss, kicked off my shoes, and joined the party.
In the past, I would've missed the magic because I was too busy cleaning it up.
THAT is the power of gratitude.
Gratitude is what Laura Doyle calls the double-duty intimacy skill because it changes two people at once. It softens your heart, and people naturally respond differently when they feel appreciated.
The truth is, most of us have brains that are wired to scan for what's wrong. That's normal.
AND, we usually find what we're looking for.
So what if we started looking for what's right?
What if your husband isn't just forgetting the dishes... what if he's choosing to throw the ball with your kids?
What if he's not totally absent watching a baseball game... what else might be true? Maybe he's taking a little time to recharge. What if your kids aren't just making a mess... what if they're making memories?
What if there's more treasure hiding in your home than you think?
