Protecting Yourself... or Punishing Your Husband

Here’s a question that completely wrecked me (in the best way):

Am I protecting myself… or am I punishing my husband?

Yikes.

When we’ve been hurt, protecting ourselves feels like the obvious choice. We zip it up, lock it down, and

promise ourselves we’ll never feel that kind of pain again. No more leaning in. No more flirting. No more vulnerability. No more risking rejection.

Makes sense, right?

Except… I realized something.

Sometimes my “protection” wasn’t actually protecting me. It was quietly punishing my husband. And I wasn't happy either.

I’d withhold affection until he earned it. I’d save my smile for when he deserved it. I’d keep my heart locked up until I knew it was 100% safe.

Meanwhile, I was wondering why we felt like roommates.

The Six Intimacy Skills gave me a giant head scratcher:

What if I’m not protecting my heart… what if I’m protecting myself from being vulnerable?

Those are two very different things.

A limit says, “Here’s what I’ll do to take care of me.”

Punishment—often without even realizing it—says, “Now you get to feel what I felt.”

Protection—fueled by fear—whispers, “Put the walls back up.”

And fear has a sneaky way of disguising itself as wisdom.

Here’s the wild part…

The more I tried to protect myself from getting hurt, the less connected I felt. Not just to my husband—I lost connection with myself.

I wasn’t just starving my marriage. I was starving myself.

Every time I withheld my warmth, my playfulness, or my affection in the name of staying “safe,” I was giving away my own peace. I wasn’t becoming stronger. I was becoming harder.

I stopped being the woman I wanted to be.

I missed me.

The playful me. The warm me. The woman who smiled because she wanted to—not because someone earned it.

Turns out, my walls didn’t just keep pain out.

They kept joy out too.

That was my aha.

A little experiment for tonight…

Before you pull away, ask yourself:

“Am I protecting myself… or am I actually punishing the man I love?”

No shame. No guilt. Just curiosity.

Then ask yourself one more question:

“What would the woman I want to become do next?”

If it feels aligned, choose one tiny act of courage. Receive the hug. Touch his arm. Smile across the kitchen. Say, “I’d love that.”

Not to change him.

Not to guarantee a response.

Simply because that’s the woman you want to become.

Turns out, the safest place I’ve ever found wasn’t behind my walls.

It was trusting myself enough to open the gate✨
